Treat Pain Naturally

Aches, pains, sprains and strains, we’ve all been there. Pain isn’t something that we have to reach for pharmaceuticals to treat though! There are COUNTLESS natural options that can treat all kinds of pain! Today, I am going to give you MY favorite all natural pain relievers!

I want to start with Arnica Montana. This is a homeopathic medicine that has been my go to for back pain for years. Arnica has this amazing ability to relieve pain in your joints and muscles, it treats backache and inflammation, bruising, swelling, stiffness and even fatigue. I keep a 30c and 200c strength on hand. I use the 30c most days, but if I gauge my pain at an 8 or higher, I reach for the 200c. You can pick this up at most health food stores in the form of homeopathic pellets, balms, creams, and tablets. You can safely use it topically and take it internally at the same time. If you opt to use the homeopathic pellets, please don’t touch the pellets with your fingers, they dispense straight into the cap, just pour them from the cap directly under your tongue and let them dissolve.

Next, I feel that these warrant a mention, because they have seen me through many a painful episode. Wu Yang Brand plasters are pain relievers and bruise healers! This is a patch that you can cut to size and apply after a hot shower, it will stick for 24 hours and provide you with pain relief and bruise reduction. You can find these Chinese herbal medicine on Amazon. I have used them on shin splints, bruises, back pain, foot pain, leg pain, arm pain and neck pain. They work, and they are all natural. You can’t ask for better than that!

Another pain reliever that I love is White Willow Bark. This is natures version of aspirin. Now, this is essentially aspirin and should be treated with the same precautions. It is used to treat inflammation, acute pain, joint pain, arthritis pain, and general discomfort. It’s funny, to me at least, that once upon a time it was deemed too expensive to extract the salicin from the tree bark, so a company named Bayer, created a synthetic and less expensive version, and that would be the Bayer Aspirin that you know and love today!

I know that I never really drop a lot of brand names because I feel that as a practitioner, it’s important to remain neutral. In this case though, I have to. A company called Barefut Essential Oils makes a product called Muscle Vitality. I HAVE brands of pain relieving oil/balm/cream from all the big name EO companies, but this one is the best. It’s opinion of course. This is the ONLY one that I can use to treat any joint and muscle pain and it’s the only one that works for my other half when he has pain. He has had spinal fusion surgery and had 4 vertebrae removed. It has a nice, pleasant, GENTLE smell, it reminds me of pumpkin pie. It relieves pain in minutes and it lasts for hours. It’s also affordable and won’t stain clothes or bedding. It’s a blend of essential oils, olive oil, beeswax and distilled menthol crystals. It works. You can get this on Barefut’s website at

Magnesium. YES! Magnesium is a natural pain reliever. It is also a natural muscle relaxer. It was only recently that is was also seen to treat nerve pain. This one powerful mineral is really getting some attention. I would recommend using it daily as it also works as an anti-inflammatory. Start with a relatively low dose, say 100 mg, and take that morning and night. You can increase the dose slowly. A word of caution though, if you start out on a dose higher than 100 mg or if you bump your dose up to high to fast, chances are, diarrhea will get you. It’s also has great laxative properties. You can pick this up at any pharmacy or health food store.

Ginger. This is my go to herb for cramps that I get once a month. This is ONE thing that will work every time. It’s also great for stomach pain and indigestion. I use the whole herb supplements and not the oil! I dilute the oil well and use that topically for localized pain. This is also a phenomenal herb for arthritis pain, sciatic and nerve pain! It also has the added benefit of being anti-inflammatory. You can get this at any health food store. I want to add that it is always best get to whole herb supplements and NOT extracts. Whole herb is more effective and less processed than extracts. This applies to any herbal supplement you take.

Lemongrass Essential Oil. This stuff doesn’t only smell wonderful, it’s a potent pain reliever too! It is one the top six most powerful anti-inflammatory oils and it’s a natural analgesic. I use this a lot for knee pain and back pain. I tend to apply it neat, but you should always check for skin sensitivity when using undiluted essential oils. It’s also antipyretic, so it will bring down fevers. Again, I don’t recommend or suggest particular companies, you will resonate with the ones that you are supposed to buy from!

Formula 303, this is new to me, but since I have used it, I have come to see it for the homeopathic hero that it is! It’s a combination of Valerian Root, Passion Flower and Magnesium. It sounds simple, but it does big things. You can use this to treat pain from pulled muscles, muscle spasms, tight muscles, leg cramps, back pain, back aches and it treats PMS and menstrual cramps! How could you not want this in your life? It’s also great for stress and tension. It’s used frequently to treat tension headaches and migraines. You can order this on Amazon!

Now, this one is free, it’s Energy Medicine and I learned it from my mom. I have issues that cause me to have cramps of the highest order once a month. There have been nights that the pain has been so great that it has woken me form a dead sleep. When this happens, the last thing that I want to do is get out of bed to take herbs or oils and wait for them to kick in. I simply take my right pointer finger and make COUNTERCLOCKWISE circles around the area that hurts. This can stop the pain all together in a very short period of time. I do of course use affirmations during the process. Give it a try the next time you have an ache or pain and see how it works for you!

See, nature abounds with options for pain treatment and none of them require a drug or a prescription. I hope that all of you try at least one new pain relief technique! I cannot wait to hear about your results. As always, I am available if you need more information. You can contact me at
